We know it’s challenging to find places that provide fast, affordable, healthy foods, so I’ve always encouraged parents to cook more at home. But let’s face it, Johnny has lacrosse practice from 3-5pm and Jamie has soccer from 5-7pm, so the most practical solution is take out. Or is it? I’ve always found it ironic that families with young athletes, those with kids that should fuel their bodies with the highest quality foods, are the ones with the least amount of time to cook meals at home. So what are we to do?
I present to you…the HEALTHYOUT APP! This app, available for free for the iphone or android, helps consumers make healthy selections from restaurants located near your home, with options for dine out, pick up or delivery!
The HealthyOut Food Philosophy, according to their website, is as follows: “Our food philosophy is intentionally simple. We focus on getting the right ingredients on the plate, the wrong ones off, and eating with balance, flexibility & portions right for you. It’s about finding your healthy rhythm…and we’re here to help.”
What makes a HealthyOut dish? HealthyOut focuses on real foods and minimizes or eliminates processed foods. Meals are composed of vegetables and lean proteins, healthy fats, like avocados, nuts, fish, and minimally processed whole grains. HealthyOut believes different bodies thrive on different diets, so it offers options to satisfy most families: Balanced, High Protein, Heart Healthy, Vegetarian, Pescetarian, Paleo, Low Fat and Vegan. It also helps identify dishes that fit into an Atkins, South Beach, Mediterranean, Weight Watchers or Zone diets. I also like the fact that HealthyOut focuses less on number of calories and more on the quality of the foods, but they do consider portion sizes.
HealthyOut finds healthy dishes either by analyzing published nutrition facts for chain restaurants, and at non-chain restaurants, they study dishes and ingredient lists, and work with the restaurants to understand the healthiest options available.
HealthyOut is easy to use: Start your search with an address or zip code and select Delivery, Pick Up or Dine Out. Then “Find Food!” There are several filters to refine your search:
Nutrition- Balanced, Heart Healthy, High Protein, etc
Cuisines- American, Chinese, Mexican, Italian, etc
Ingredients- Beef, Chicken, Eggs, Fish, Pasta etc
Type of Dish- Sandwich, Salad, Stir Fry, Burger, Sushi and many more
You can also include or exclude Fast Food establishments. Once you choose your restaurant, you can see all the selections and healthy modifications, place your order and voila! that’s it!
